Murals in Tucson, Arizona

Tucson has a LOT of murals. By some counts there are over 100, and many of them are very large. It seems like everywhere you walk downtown there is high quality giant artwork on the walls. To that end, these murals are a living piece of art - constantly being replaced and updated. Many artists such as Joe Pagac are prolific - contributing many pieces around town.

I set aside some time this weekend to walk about and take photos of all of the cool artwork downtown. If you are in Tucson, or planning a trip, here's a good resource that is google map friendly if you would like a bit of a guided tour:

Mayahuel (Goddess of Agave) by Rock "CyFi" Martinez - an iconic and large mural in Tucson, this is painted on the Benjamin Supply Building and depicts a goddess from Aztec Culture. The plant on her head is agave which is used to make tequila.
This mural is actually on a historic site. La Pilita was completed in the 1980s by Martin Moreno and refurbished in 2011.
Epic Rides by Joe Pagac is a staple locally. Shops sell tee shirts and stickers with the characters. It is gigantic and hilarious and references the popularity of cycling in Tucson.
Victor Ving and Lisa Beggs - part of a "Greetings Tour" of murals that these artists are travelling around in an RV and creating designed to display uplifting imagery.
Vergiss is by an international muralist named Fin Dac. It is meant to challenge traditional ideas of female passivity, sexual objectification, and exoticism.
Can't miss this one on fourth Ave. Have you ever seen a Realty office decorated like this? Love it!
This is a tribute to Prince. Near the Rialto. Brings back memories of the Purple Rain film.
Creation Story, Chaos Theory, and Quantum Memory by To-Ree-Nee Wolf - tells a story using imagery from the artist's Native American heritage about nature and becoming in the world. 2016, Tucson Arts Brigade Mural Project
I love this reference to the TV show "What We Do In The Shadows"
The scale of some of these is amazing.
When Generation Cool is open, it's a fun store filled with nostalgia. When it is closed, there is a garage door painted with your favourite nostalgia. Win-win.
